Week Six
In the final week of Phase 2, children will revise all the sounds they have learned so far, as well as the high frequency and tricky words, applying this knowledge through reading and writing practise.
This week also gives you the perfect opportunity to assess children’s current level to decide whether they are ready to move on to Phase 3, or would benefit from additional help.
You may find that some pupils are just struggling on one or two sounds, rather than the whole set. If this is the case, it is still possible to move on to Phase 3 as the Phase 2 sounds will be regularly revisited and utilised in the coming weeks. We have assessment resources to help with this, available for school members on our assessment resources page, as well as a structured intervention programme for children who need additional input. If you feel that the majority of the group, perhaps through missed learning due to school closures, has large knowledge gaps, it may be advisable to repeat the whole of phase 2.
All our interactive phase 2 phonics games will be accessible for children this week and will help them to revise blending for reading and segmenting for writing. The blending games are also brilliant practice for the year 1 phonics screening check as they use both real and alien words for children to blend. You can also use the phase 2 phonics consolidation booklet which is included in the accompanying resource folder.
