    Phase Two

validated phonics programme

Letters and Sounds phase 2 aligned planning and resources, designed to help you save time and teach phonics like a specialist.

Discover phase 2 phonics activities, worksheets and phonics play phase 2 activities and ideas. Our ideas are low-prep, enjoyable and fun for all and can be delivered by both a classroom teacher or teaching assistant to smaller groups. All of the phase 2 phonics resources are included in each daily lesson, to be downloaded as and when you need them to save you time.

In each resource folder, you can find a selection of sound cards - these are split into sound cards (containing the grapheme), sound and picture cards (containing the grapheme and picture) and picture cards. We recommend using the sound card, though please use your teacher judgement if you feel children need the sound and picture card initially.

Each week comprises of 5 lessons that follow the four part lesson sequence suggested in the Letters and Sounds framework.

Each lesson introduces new phonemes, graphemes, tricky words, high frequency words and common exception words, in the same sequence suggested by Letters and Sounds. There are 6 weeks in total for phase 2, after which we recommend moving onto our phase 3 letters and sounds planning.

The purpose of this phase is to teach at least 19 letters, and move children on from oral blending and segmentation to blending and segmenting with letters. By the end of the phase some children will be able to read some VC and CVC words and to spell them either using magnetic letters or by writing the letters on paper or on whiteboards.

Before starting this phase, you should have completed our phonics training. We also recommend watching the 'robot arms' video below as a quick reminder.
